BERWYN, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TruePosition, Inc., a leading provider of wireless location technologies and solutions and a subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation, today announced that it has shipped its 100,000th TruePosition® Location Measurement Unit™ (TruePosition® LMU™). TruePosition LMUs are the key component of TruePosition’s Location Platform that includes Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA), which is a high-accuracy wireless location technique that is used to locate mobile phones.

TruePosition U-TDOA is currently deployed in the United States to locate people who dial 9-1-1 from their mobile phone in emergency situations. The location information is used by Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) to send the applicable first responders to the proper location.

In the U.S., the number of 9-1-1 calls coming from mobile phones is increasing. The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website states that of the millions of 9-1-1 calls received by public safety personnel, about 50 percent are from wireless phones, and that percentage is growing.

There are currently more than 75,000 TruePosition LMUs deployed across the United States, and the TruePosition U-TDOA protects more than 100 million people. TruePosition U-TDOA locates more than 60 million wireless 9-1-1 calls each year.

TruePosition U-TDOA is currently deployed in many parts of the world for various mission-critical applications. In addition to locating emergency calls, government agencies around the globe are using TruePosition U-TDOA together with the TruePosition® Location Intelligence Management System to secure borders, protect critical infrastructure, counter terrorism, and combat crime.

The TruePosition LMU, which is commonly installed at the cell towers, measures the time it takes for the cellular signal to travel from the mobile phone to surrounding cell towers. Multiple measurements are combined to calculate the accurate location of the phone.

One of the key benefits of TruePosition U-TDOA is its ability to work indoors and in dense urban environments with tall buildings, which are both conditions where GPS has limited performance.

“This milestone is significant for TruePosition and for the public safety and national security communities,” stated Stephen Stuut, Chief Executive Officer for TruePosition “The continued increase of TruePosition LMU deployments shows the strong need for mission-critical location-based safety and security solutions.”
