GREENWICH, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NYPPEX, a leading global secondary private market advisory, trading and research firm for illiquid assets released to customers its 2009 Secondary Private Market Review and 2010 Outlook (the “Report”).

“Secondary private transaction volume for private partnership interests declined approximately 39% to $12.3 billion in 2009 vs. 2008, largely due to the record amount of withdrawn secondary offerings, which we estimate to be approximately $13.8 billion”, states Laurence G. Allen, Managing Member of NYPPEX.

The Report states that secondary private transaction volume for unregistered securities declined approximately 57% to $2.4 billion in 2009 vs. $5.7 billion in 2008. Withdrawn secondary offerings of unregistered securities in private companies comprised approximately $4.9 billion in 2009, also a record for the industry, according to NYPPEX.

The secondary median bid indication for interests in private partnerships increased approximately 55% to 56.44 (expressed as a percentage of net asset value) vs. the twelve month low of 36.26 on March 31, 2009. The secondary median bid indication for unregistered securities increased approximately 138% to 46.69 (expressed as a percentage of a fund’s stated fair value) vs. the twelve month low of 19.64 on June 30, 2009.

Bid spreads among comparable funds in the U.S, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia widened in 2009, as expectations regarding regional economic conditions changed throughout the year.

NYPPEX projects that secondary private transaction volume for interests in private partnerships could increase by as much as 2.7x in 2010, citing the withdrawn offerings, tightening bid-offer spreads and $14 billion in capital raised by secondary funds in 2009 among the reasons for the expected increase in volume.
