SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Welch Allyn, a leading global manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, today announced the acquisition of Miami-based MD International (MDI), a medical products distributor in Latin America. The move will position Welch Allyn for greater opportunities in emerging markets in South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, as the company leverages both MDI’s strong brand and market share in the region and its long-standing relationships with large distribution and manufacturer partners.

“For more than two decades, Welch Allyn has enjoyed a mutually beneficial partnership with MDI – one that has made significant strides in bringing the very best of frontline care to Latin American markets,” said Julie Shimer, president and CEO of Welch Allyn. “This decision, made with the full support of MDI leadership, is consistent with the overall strategic direction of our company, specifically our intention to expand our global reach.”

MDI President Al Merritt was employed at Welch Allyn in the 1980s, when he saw the potential for a streamlined distributor of medical equipment in one of the most diverse regions of the world. Encouraged by Welch Allyn leadership, Merritt founded MDI in 1987, taking on Welch Allyn as its first line of products. Since then, both Welch Allyn and MDI have shared a similar vision and company culture, as well as a seamless business relationship.

“With the expertise and resources of MDI, there is no limit to what we can achieve in this relatively untapped region,” said Shimer. “Despite a struggling global economy, economic indicators point to modest growth in Latin America in the year ahead. This acquisition allows our company the opportunity to put Welch Allyn products into the hands of every frontline caregiver and those of our represented manufacturers in this part of the world.”

Under the terms of the acquisition, MDI’s 154 employees, its’ legal entities in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, as well as sales personnel located in Argentina, Chile, Puerto Rico, and Panama will become part of Welch Allyn. Welch Allyn will continue to utilize MDI’s headquarters located in Miami.
