High-performance mobile solution targeted for rapidly growing global smartphone market

Mobile World Congress 2013

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Silicon Image (NASDAQ: SIMG), a leading provider of HD connectivity solutions today announced the availability of a reference design based on MediaTek’s Quad-Core MT6589 smartphone platform and Silicon Image’s SiI8338 MHL® transmitter with Media Data Tunneling (MDT) technology. The high-performance MT6589 platform has been designed to deliver a premium smartphone experience at affordable price points. When combined with the SiI8338, this platform turns smartphones into ultra-portable PCs or multi-media entertainment devices when connected to MHL-enabled computing accessories or large displays.

“The Quad-Core MT6589 reference design delivers a highly integrated communications, multi-media, and mobile computing platform in a single system-on-chip (SOC),” said Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the Smartphone Business Unit at MediaTek, Inc. “What is more, our future is much more than smartphones. By integrating the Silicon Image MHL transmitter and MDT technology into our platform, we are able to maximize the computing capabilities of the MT6589 Quad-Core processor and expand its reach to smartphone models that meet the communications, multi-media, and productivity needs of consumers today and tomorrow. The multi-screen entertainment experience has never been so immersive and affordable, and consumers, from now on, will have more choices in determining how they want to enjoy content.”

Silicon Image MDT technology is a protocol designed to enable MHL mobile devices, such as smartphones, to transmit data simultaneously with HD video and audio to another MHL device. By utilizing this technology manufacturers can quickly develop mobile computing accessories for MHL-enabled smartphones and tablets, including keyboards, touch pads, mice or touch panels to interact with an MHL-enabled display. Silicon Image MDT technology has been integrated into the Silicon Image SiI8338 MHL® transmitter and is delivered via the MHL link on the smartphone.

“Our collaboration with MediaTek has resulted in new smart productivity applications that leverage the power of the MT6589 platform and highlight the full capabilities of our MHL solutions,” said Tim Vehling, Vice President of Product Marketing at Silicon Image, Inc. “We look forward to smartphones and computing accessories based on this high-performance reference platform being deployed into the global market, enabling consumers everywhere to experience their smartphones or tablets functioning as both an entertainment as well as a mobile computing device.”
