Automotive solutions based on Freescale S12 microcontrollers and analog ICs on display this week at Freescale Technology Forum China

FTF China 2012

BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) today introduced two automotive heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) reference control solutions that provide comprehensive, production-ready hardware and software enablement designed to speed up development cycles and reduce overall R&D costs for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.

The two reference solutions are low-power, inexpensive, multi-functional and scalable and can be tailored for a customer’s unique 12V or 24V automotive HVAC system requirements. The reference solutions integrate Freescale S12G and S12HY 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) and MC33905, MC33932 and MC33937 analog devices, along with key motor control algorithms. The solutions are able to drive most types of HVAC motors, such as BLDC, DC and steppers. The designs feature energy saving modes, low noise environment, configurable climate control and advanced features for sensing faults in the HVAC operations.

"The automotive electronics industry in the Asia-Pacific region is rapidly developing, and automotive consumers are looking for richer content and better driving experiences,” said Steve Pancoast, vice president of product solutions for Freescale’s Automotive, Industrial & Multi-Market Solutions Group. “Our new HVAC control reference solutions and technical support from Freescale’s global solutions centers allow our customers to rapidly deploy new systems, adding features to their vehicles that please consumers while reducing overall development costs.”

The automotive HVAC control reference solutions will be demonstrated at the Freescale Technology Forums in China and India.

Automotive HVAC control platform

The two reference solutions announced today are the initial offerings of a platform Freescale is creating to provide solutions for entry-level to advanced automotive HVAC control designs. These solutions can automatically adjust the modes for vehicle temperature, blowing and defog and automatically switch between internal and external air circulation systems according to changes in ambient temperature, humidity and air quality parameters. In addition, the LCD screen in the reference solution can display rich content, including temperature, wind speed and calendar to help provide a more convenient, comfortable and safe driving experience.

The main features of the reference solutions include:

  • Ultra-low-power mode to wake up the system through the human-machine interface or LIN / CAN bus
  • The ability to drive three types of motors (sensor-less BLDC, DC and stepper)
  • Automatic climate control
  • Support for multiple temperature zones
  • CAN / LIN communication interface
  • 3 x 3 matrix keyboard with two encoder input knobs
  • 3 x 37 LCD segment display with adjustable backlighting
  • Support for temperature, lighting, humidity and air quality sensors
  • Two logic relay interfaces for connecting the compressor and defrost module
  • Real-time clock and date display, adjustable calendar
  • External touch keyboard or touch screen
  • Suitable for 12V and 24V air conditioning systems
