Inaugural pre-conference program promotes dealmaking

ChinaBio Partnering Forum 2012

CARLSBAD, Calif. & SUZHOU, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EBD Group, the leading partnering firm for the life science industry, and ChinaBio® LLC, a leading consulting firm in Shanghai, will host ChinaBio® Partnering Forum 2012 at the Kempinski Hotel Suzhou, May 23–24 in Suzhou, China. A special Partnering Bootcamp, a half-day pre-conference program sponsored by Cooley LLP, will be held on Tuesday, May 22 prior to the opening reception.

The special afternoon program, called “Partnering Bootcamp: How to Partner with Global Pharma,” is designed to be a practical “how to” session for new or experienced entrepreneurs launching their life science business in China. The bootcamp will offer advice and practical tips for protecting intellectual property, and foster discussion on developing partnerships with international pharma.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to host this special program to share our expertise in advising global life sciences companies on issues ranging from venture capital and private equity to IP strategy and partnering,” said Patrick Loofbourrow, a Shanghai Partner with Cooley LLP. “The bootcamp will jump start the week for delegates and may even change their long-term business agendas.”

Bootcamp speakers will discuss specific points on dealmaking in China, including what to expect from a partnering relationship and how to meet and impress potential partners. They will also consider trends in licensing and partnering transactions in China’s growing life science sector.

The pre-conference program continues with “Optimizing your business in China” with Cooley LLP Partners Lila Hope and Nan Wu from Palo Alto/Shanghai and San Francisco/San Diego, respectively. The speakers will discuss the challenges in launching a life science business in China, from the first in-license at a company’s formation to partnering pipeline products.

“Cooley LLP has been the leading law firm in the life sciences arena,” said Lila Hope. “We have decades of industry knowledge and deal experience helping our life sciences clients at the most critical junctures such as licensing, discovery collaborations, product partnering, financing, public offering and M&A. We are also there on a day-to-day basis counseling on patents, corporate, tax, employment, antitrust and regulatory matters. I am looking forward to sharing my experience and exchanging ideas with the bootcamp participants on the intricacy of life sciences deal-making.”

“Cooley's life science patent practice is uniquely suited for cross border deals as a number of attorneys in the group have advanced technical degrees and are bilingual,” said Nan Wu. “Working alongside Chinese associates, we have been carrying out a considerable amount of patent filings and portfolio management in China on behalf of both US and Chinese life science companies.”

“What to expect from a partnering relationship,” will cover what to look for in a partner in China to what those partners are looking for in return. The panel features speakers Lila Hope, Greg B. Scott, President and Founder of ChinaBio® LLC, and Jimmy Z. Zhang, Worldwide Licensing & Acquisitions with Merck & Co., Inc.

“Partnering is a critical part of business development and certainly is one of the most important steps your company will take. It should be carefully planned and executed,” said Zhang. “The key to China is in understanding the finer complexities ranging from licensing to co-development and distribution channels. This panel really echoes the theme of the conference; relationships are the key ingredient to creating a presence in China. ”

The focus on partnering continues in a third panel, “How to meet and impress potential partners” with speaker Martina Molsbergen, CEO of C14 Consulting Group, that is designed to guide delegates in maximizing their experience at ChinaBio®Partnering Forum 2012. Molsbergen will review features of EBD Group's powerful partneringONE® system that allow companies to present their projects, screen potential partners, and set up meetings during the conference. partneringONE® enables delegates to efficiently identify, meet and network with companies from across the life science value chain.

ChinaBio® Partnering Forum is the premier life science partnering event in China. Held in Suzhou, China, the event will attract biotech and pharma leaders from around the world along with hundreds of China-based developers of novel technologies for two days of productive partnering.

Online registration for the conference will close on May 17, 2012, 5:00 PM PDT, after which all registrations will be handled on site. Information on the conference and registration details can be found online at www.ebdgroup.com/cbpf/registration.
