WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UpToDate®, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, announces the addition of General Surgery to its clinical knowledge system. Subscribers to UpToDate can now access clinical information and evidence-based recommendations in 19 specialties.

UpToDate is an evidence-based resource that improves patient outcomes by providing physicians with fast, accurate clinical answers to help them make the right decisions at the point of care. Beta testing by surgeons has shown that UpToDate answers 94% of general surgeons' clinical questions and 87% of their surgery-specific questions.

Editors-in-Chief of the new General Surgery content are Raphael E Pollock, MD, Professor and Head of the Division of Surgery of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and David Soybel, MD, Professor of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for Penn State Hershey Medical Center. These editors, along with 19 section editors, worked to develop topics that cover all the major areas of General Surgery. These include abdominal wall and hernia, bariatric and metabolic, breast, burn, colorectal, endocrine, head and neck, pancreatic and hepatobiliary, plastic and reconstructive, skin and soft tissue, thoracic, trauma, upper GI, and vascular surgery. Also included are sections on minimally invasive surgery, as well as anesthesia and analgesia, general surgical principles and surgical quality and safety.

"General surgeons are an essential ingredient that keeps full-service medical care within reach," said Denise S. Basow, MD, President and Editor-in-Chief of UpToDate. "The General Surgery content complements the medical content that is already part of UpToDate, and allows physicians to answer questions about the broad range of medical and surgical problems that confront patients every day. That is why this new General Surgery content is such an important addition to UpToDate's offerings. Authored and edited by leaders in the field, these General Surgery topics provide surgeons with access to trusted clinical information that can help guide decisions and improve patient outcomes."
