BRUSSELS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ExxonMobil and SML Maschinengesellschaft m.b.H are collaborating at K2016 to demonstrate a simplified process that can be used to produce small- to medium-sized pouches through coextrusion coating. The coextrusion coating layers include Exceed™ 0019XC performance polymer and Escor™ ethylene acrylic acid copolymer resins.
This process which involves the coextrusion coating of a high-performance sealant to a PET substrate offers a unique combination of benefits. These include cost savings through a one-step process and low extrusion processing temperature which deliver performance improvements in hot tack yet with good adhesion.
“The production of food packaging pouches involves a complex development process and many production steps before it is filled with tasty food. The process has been developed in response to changing trends in the food industry which is driving the need for more convenience and “on-the-go” packaging solutions.

When processed in coextrusion or in a blend with low density polyethylene (LDPE) produced in a high pressure autoclave reactor Exceed 0019XC offers a combination of attributes that deliver overall package performance. This includes a wide sealing range and broad hot tack window. Through careful resin design and processing conditions, optimum sealing performance is achieved without compromising overall processability, while the grade also delivers a lower coefficient of friction (COF) than competitive grades. Sealing solutions provided by this new grade can optimize package integrity to help reduce package leakage and increase package fill rates.
