HONG KONG--()--Citi celebrated its 11th annual Global Community Day yesterday, as 3,300 Citi volunteers in Hong Kong joined tens of thousands of colleagues, family and friends in more than 500 cities in 91 countries and territories to engage in service activities in their local communities. In the days leading up to and including Global Community Day, Citi volunteers participated in more than 1,300 service projects ranging from urban revitalization to literacy and education, career readiness, environmental conservation and disaster relief.

“Volunteerism is a key part of giving back to the communities we serve around the globe,” said Citi CEO Michael Corbat. “My colleagues and I share the view that our success as a company is inextricably linked to the positive outcomes and progress we can help enable for others.”

Weber Lo, Citi Country Officer and Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong and Macau, said, “Global Community Day has become a tradition at Citi. What makes it unique is that on one day, we have the opportunity to harness the spirit of volunteering as a global team. We know we can make the biggest impact when we come together to accomplish a shared goal, one that enables progress and growth in the communities we serve daily.”

Across the world, Citi volunteers have led hundreds of community projects. In Hong Kong, 3,300 volunteers participated in 26 community activities for six NGOs under five service categories: caring for the elderly, supporting the physically and mentally challenged, caring for underprivileged families and children, environmental conservation, and social inclusion.

The NGO partners for this year’s Global Community Day in Hong Kong included: The Community Chest, Lok Sin Tong, Po Leung Kuk, Shelter Box Hong Kong, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and WWF Hong Kong.

Global Community Day offers a wide range of service opportunities to work alongside community and non-profit partners to help improve our cities and neighborhoods. Many of the youth involved with the Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative are participating and planning volunteer events across key cities globally. Citi is also partnering with companies including Bloomberg and Deloitte, bringing together employee volunteers for select urban projects in New York City, Mexico City, Hong Kong, Lagos, and Mumbai. Since the inaugural Global Community Day in 2006, Citi volunteers have contributed more than 2.5 million hours of service to Global Community Day projects in hundreds of cities.
