CHICAGO--()--KVH Co. Ltd., Asia’s leading information delivery platform headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, today announced it is launching “DCNet,” KVH’s new burstable data center to data center interconnection service that will link 100 data centers across Asia in 2014. With service availability in July 2014, DCNet offers pre-wired carrier-grade elastic Ethernet connectivity between not only KVH’s data centers but also many other industry leading data centers in the region providing customers with a greater choice in where they collocate and with whom they connect.

Data centers serve an increasingly critical role for enterprises, cloud platform providers, and service providers, and they are at the center of the technology evolution. The increase in both the number of data center facilities as well as the adoption of data center related services is driving increases in data center to data center traffic by approximately 26%1 annually, reaching 530 exabytes of traffic in 2017. This traffic growth is creating a need for cost effective and rapidly scalable data center connectivity solutions that connect different data centers, internal IT, and network infrastructure across multiple sites to customers and business partners located in different data centers and possibly across multiple geographies.

DCNet will reach 100 data center facilities in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Singapore and Hong Kong. The service will also be supported with on-ramps from the United States via CoreSite, a U.S. provider of secure, reliable, high-performance data center solutions, with data centers stretching from Silicon Valley and Los Angeles to Chicago and New York. Available as a point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint service, DCNet delivers bandwidth from 100Mbps to 10Gbps across a pre-wired eco-system of facilities, with a 100Gbps service becoming available in Q1, 2015. This service is a replacement of more expensive point to point primary networks and is designed to meet an enterprise’s connectivity needs for business continuity planning (BCP), diversification of data center sites, and expansion of data center usage. DCNet is also attractive to service providers and cloud platform providers that require connectivity to multiple data center sites with broad geographic coverage and want to avoid the complexity of negotiating and managing many individual network contracts.

Key characteristics of DCNet are as follows:

Simplified pricing with bandwidth on demand: DCNet is available as either a burstable or fixed bandwidth service. The burstable DCNet service has standard per megabit bandwidth rates for Metro DCNet and International DCNet connectivity, and customers need only to subscribe to a port at a low monthly fee. The service is a “pay-as-you-grow” model with usage based billing, providing customers with a very low entry point for connectivity, reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), and the ability to opt for new data centers as and when their business grows. The fixed bandwidth DCNet service provides guaranteed bandwidth between sites and is for those customers that understand their traffic requirements and seek high performance with limited variability in bandwidth throughput.

  • Quick delivery and upgrades: Network provisioning between data center sites is guaranteed to be completed within 2 business days. With cross-connects inside the data center from the customer rack to KVH’s DCNet equipment typically requiring 1 – 7 days to complete, a DCNet connection end-to-end can be ready for use within a week versus the industry standard of six weeks.
  • Simplified operations: DCNet provides one simplified contract for data center network connectivity across multiple facilities and multiple countries without the hassles of complex negotiations, management overhead, and long lead times. KVH can also manage a customer’s cross-connects in the DCNet data centers in which they are connected to further reduce the customer’s burden of network management.
  • Wide coverage: When completely rolled out, DCNet will allow customers to connect to 100 of the leading data centers in Asia thereby seamlessly linking customers with business partners, suppliers, and service providers. These data centers were strategically chosen to include service providers in multiple domains interconnecting cloud and application providers, content distributors, as well as key carrier hubs.
  • Service ecosystem: By procuring just one DCNet port, all members in this ecosystem become just a cross-connect away enabling customers to easily and quickly procure services such as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and other cloud-based applications, thereby changing the way customers choose and utilize data center resources.

“KVH’s DCNet is a game changing service as it links the leading data centers in Asia’s major financial cities across many different data center operators into a common virtual data center cloud,” explains Ted Higase, KVH President and Chief Executive Officer. “As IT becomes more service-based, with these services being driven out of data centers, connectivity between data centers for service providers, content distributors, and enterprises becomes ever so more important. DCNet represents a big step for KVH in addressing this demand as well as in offering a usage-based network service that will allow customers to order and activate networks between data centers in an as-needed fashion using SDN (Software-Defined-Network) technology. With DCNet, linking to other data centers becomes just a cross-connect way.”
