TOKYO--()--KVH Co., Ltd., Asia’s leading Information Delivery Platform, today announced that it will begin offering “etherXEN,” KVH’s new next-generation Ethernet service suite, starting in May 2014. The burstable feature option for etherXEN will become available in August 2014. The etherXEN service suite is delivered on a recently upgraded next-generation Carrier Ethernet Multi-Service Platform and is capable of supporting Software-Defined-Network (SDN) features such as on-demand provisioning and dynamic bandwidth allocation (“bursting”). This new platform expands KVH’s service coverage, which is based on much of its own optical fiber network, to include all areas in Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, and Osaka and provides customers with diversity options from other major Japanese carriers.

Various services under the etherXEN brand will be deployed over the coming months, including a burstable Ethernet service in August that will allow customers to procure a limited amount of bandwidth and dynamically consume more bandwidth up to 1G, 10G, and 100G to meet unexpected traffic demands. etherXEN targets enterprises and carriers who demand cost-effective, scalable carrier-grade Ethernet, and the service is also designed to support advanced cloud and data center services and those with complex network requirements. Constructed on Cyan (NYSE: CYNI) Z-Series metro packet-optical and Accedian MetroNODE LT/GT network technology, etherXEN leverages Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN Platform for service automation and orchestration.

Key characteristics of etherXEN are as follows.

  • High flexibility and scalability: Supports bandwidth from 1Mbps to 100Gbps1. In addition to the bursting service, etherXEN’s guaranteed bandwidth services can be flexibly changed from 1Mbps to 1Gbps without requiring different equipment or interfaces, allowing customers to quickly address traffic fluctuations between sites, data centers, and cloud platforms.
  • Quick delivery and upgrades: Service delivery can be completed in as fast as 10 business days for on-net buildings, compared with the industry standard of six weeks.
  • Cost effective: With its flat architecture, simplified management and provisioning control plane, etherXEN has a low cost structure. Customers can expect up to 30% cost saving from existing fixed bandwidth services offered by major Japanese carriers, making etherXEN one of the lowest costs per Mbps in Japan. The service is also capable of supporting different network services, such as EPL, EVPL and ELAN, on the same infrastructure.
  • Carrier-class premium quality network with low latency: With its redundant core backbone network, the etherXEN “Dual Class” access network configuration provides end-to-end guaranteed bandwidth, while the “Single Class” access network configuration offers network redundancy limited to the network core. The etherXEN network will automatically switch within 50milliseconds of a failure and the service is backed with industry leading service level agreements (SLAs).

We are excited to launch etherXEN since this service portfolio defines our next-generation network services and positions KVH on the forefront of Ethernet technology,” said Machifumi Kashiwagi, Vice President, Product Management at KVH. “etherXEN services, with its increased network coverage and cost effectiveness, will provide carrier diversity to customers, who currently rely on the limited number of service providers in Japan. KVH has always placed Ethernet at the heart of its network solutions strategy, and this new network and product line extends our leadership in carrier Ethernet and will help our customers improve the way they deliver their services across Asia.”

The etherXEN service suite is comprised of the following services:

  • etherXEN Private Line
    • Guaranteed bandwidth (May 2014)
      • EPL Standard (Ethernet Private Line): Point-to-point connectivity with guaranteed bandwidth
      • EVPL (Ethernet Virtual Private Line): Point-to-multipoint connectivity with guaranteed bandwidth
    • Dynamic Bandwidth (August 2014)
    • EPL Burst (Ethernet Private Line): Point-to-point connectivity with dynamic bandwidth
    • EVPL Burst (Ethernet Virtual Private Line): Point-to-multipoint connectivity with dynamic bandwidth
  • etherXEN for AWS (May 2014)
  • Dedicated private network to AWS Direct Connect
  • E-LAN (Ethernet LAN): Multipoint-to-multipoint connectivity
  • etherXEN Multi-Connect (August 2014)

The etherXEN Service is KVH’s next generation Ethernet platform replacing the Ether-MAN Service, which will be retired in 2016.

Pricing for the etherXEN Service will vary according to interface and other variables. Please contact the KVH’s Japan Sales Office (sales-japan@KVHasia.com) for further details.
