CEATEC JAPAN 2013

TOKYO--()--The 'CEATEC AWARD 2013' award selection has been held at CEATEC JAPAN 2013, based on this year's exhibition theme of 'Smart Innovation-Technology for future society and lifestyles’. The objective of the CEATEC awards is to contribute to ongoing development and the creation of new markets in the IT and electronics industry. This marks the third CEATEC awards, which have garnered a great deal of attention while providing opportunities for Japan to spread the word globally of its cutting-edge technologies. Last year, the 'Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award' and 'Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award' were established.

We announce the winners of this year’s 'Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award' and 'Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award' as selected by an impartial panel of CEATEC award committee panel members.

'Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award'

NTT DOCOMO, INC. “Next-generation 5G mobile communications”

[Product Summary]
A Next-generation (5G) wireless communication system, built for the anticipated future traffic explosion
In 10 years from now, communication traffic is expected to increase between 500 to 1000 fold. NTT DOCOMO responds with a Next-generation (5G) wireless communication system which they are currently researching and promoting.
This system implements a wireless access technology for enriching spectral efficiency, in conjunction with technology to effectively utilize high-frequency/wide-frequency bandwidths, and low-cost but stable high-density network - all combined to be mutually complementary.

[Selection committee commentary]
This innovative architecture combines high and low-frequency bands, and was highly favored due to both its collective technological strength, and incredible uniqueness. Above the rest, the added-value make-up of this system elevates it prominently as a solution to the expected future surge in telecommunication traffic.

'Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award'

Kyocera Corporation “Piezoelectric film speakers ‘Smart Sonic® Sound’”

[Product Summary]
A New speaker structure that combines piezoelectric elements with resin film
A piezoelectric element, which applies the piezoelectricity of fine ceramics, is combined with resin film to create a new genre of speaker structure in which the film amplifies the vibrations to create sound. It enabled the development of the world’s thinnest television speaker - at just 1 mm thick. Being a mere 1/20th to 1/30th the thickness of existing speakers, it contributes to the progress of thin-film technology. The current line-up includes three sizes: small, medium and large. Development is planned for a wide range of products, such as televisions, PCs, tablets, and automotive applications.

[Selection committee commentary]
This will lead to the expansion of new markets due to their combination of uniquely refining fine-ceramic technology while cleverly capturing the market’s needs to make higher quality products thinner. This merits attention as this innovation inspires freedom in device design by overcoming the construction limitations of electromagnetic speakers.

The CEATEC award committee's selection of first and second prize winners in each individual category will be released on October 2nd (Wednesday), followed by an awards ceremony held on October 3rd (Thursday).
