Broadband World Forum ASIA 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The key to successful high speed broadband penetration in the Asia-Pacific region is strong government support and a clear regulatory vision, said industry expert Giorgio Migliarina at last week’s Broadband World Forum Asia 2011.

The world’s largest broadband event for the Asia-Pacific region, which took place 10-11 May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – co-located with IP&TV World Forum Asia 2011 - saw more than 2000 experts from 55 countries come together to discuss profiting from investment into high speed broadband as an enabler of social and economic growth in the region.

Giorgio Migliarina, chief technology and innovation officer at Telekom Malaysia, kicked off the show’s keynote presentations discussing Maximising high speed broadband penetration. Addressing old industry predictions that the future was entirely mobile, Migliarina suggested that the drastically changing nature of consumer behaviour actually meant that “the future of data is fixed, [and that as] data traffic continues to grow, countries must consider fiber deployment as a strategic investment.”

Summarising his presentation, Migliarina concluded: “Government and regulators have to intervene to ensure investments in developing countries, and the right models must be informed by local market needs and balance stakeholders’ expectations.”

Another hot topic of conversation at the show was one that Wing K. Lee, CEO of YTL Communications, addressed in his Day One presentation Tackling VOD delivery challenges to multiple platforms (PC, TV and Mobile). Discussing the key global trends in television services – convergence of digital TV and internet connection, interactivity and on-demand, and personalisation – Lee examined the next generation of TV experience and concluded that “Hybrid delivery is key”.

Gavin Whitechurch, director of the Broadband World Series, commented: “Broadband World Forum Asia provides the industry with a place to discuss and share its knowledge and predictions for the region.

“Following its absence from the industry calendar last year, it was great to see the show spark debates amongst delegates, and the feedback from those who attended has been incredible – we’re already looking forward to planning Broadband World Forum Asia 2012.”

Next year the show will remain in Malaysia and will be taking place on 15-16 May 2012 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
