"4Sight" addresses obstacles to the WiMAX or LTE technology decision and streamlines the WiMAX to LTE transition

BARCELONA, Spain -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --

4G chipmaker Sequans today unveiled an initiative to streamline 4G network transition and to future-proof 4G devices for LTE and WiMAX operators. The program, named 4Sight, provides advanced coexistence solutions for many of the technical and financial challenges faced by operators and their ecosystem partners in deploying 4G networks. 4Sight components include a highly integrated dual-4G broadband processor, supporting both WiMAX and LTE, comprehensive dual-4G reference designs for a variety of device types, complete dual-4G protocol stacks and software solutions, essential multi-radio coexistence and multi-mode handover technologies, including dual standby operation, a foundation of Sequans' broad interoperability maturity, and a roadmap for continuing innovation and leadership in both WiMAX and LTE.

"Sequans is ideally equipped to offer these solutions to 4G operators and device makers in a way that is highly cost-effective," said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. "Sequans brings its combination of operator-proven WiMAX and LTE chipsets, the integration track record to deliver a dual-4G processor, the system design experience to solve real-world coexistence and multi-mode handover challenges, and the years of experience in deploying operator-certified 4G technology in high volume around the world. And we can bundle these solutions very economically, preserving a positive business case for both operators and device makers.

"For operators, 4Sight aims to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding which technology to deploy, and for WiMAX operators offers a smooth transition plan for moving to LTE - a path that allows them to continue to monetize their existing network infrastructure while planning to move seamlessly and cost-effectively to LTE at the point in time where the return on investment makes sense. For device makers, 4Sight aims to simplify the design of devices that will work in the complex multi-mode, multi-band network environment now emerging. Device makers will find a much shorter and easier path to creating compelling 4G products."

Sequans' 4Sight solutions will work for any 4G operator and for any deployment scenario. In particular, WiMAX operators planning to add or transition to LTE -- whether full overlay, partial overlay, or no overlay with their existing network -- can seed their market with LTE-ready devices. These dual-4G devices can be designed and certified once and deployed anywhere in an operator's network, regardless of the network's LTE or WiMAX coverage status. These devices can handover between WiMAX and LTE and between 4G and legacy technologies by leveraging Sequans' unique dual-standby platform solution, providing a seamless user experience in any location.

Operators who began with WiMAX and wish to continue with WiMAX as well as those deploying LTE alone will benefit from Sequans' continuing roadmap innovation, cost improvements, 3G-4G and multi-4G interworking technology, and multi-radio coexistence solutions.

"The mobile broadband ecosystem benefits from the use of all available 4G technology," said Philip Solis, research director, ABI Research. "Some operators will fully leverage both WiMAX and LTE in a mixed, multi-mode network strategy, while others will take a single-mode approach around 4G migration and network offload. Companies like Sequans are developing innovative multi-band and multi-mode 4G solutions that provide the ecosystem with the flexibility needed to address these widely varying operator strategies."

4Sight Program Components

1. Integrated Sequans dual-4G broadband processor. Highly optimized for 4G mobile networks and devices, including smartphones, tablets, data cards, PCs, CE devices, machine-to-machine devices and more

2. Comprehensive dual-4G reference designs for a variety of device types

3. Complete dual-4G protocol stack and host software

4. Technology solutions that enable peaceful multi-radio coexistence and seamless handover in heterogeneous 4G networks

5. An ecosystem of partners and broad IOT maturity for both WiMAX and LTE, ensuring operator-ready devices

6. Roadmaps for both WiMAX and LTE that promise cost-effective, power efficient, fast time-to-market 4G products

"4Sight represents our commitment to enabling the success of all 4G operators," added Karam. "With 4Sight solutions, we believe the question of which technology to deploy no longer matters. Operators can deploy once, greatly reducing device acquisition costs, and be fully prepared for 4G."
