Judges Choose Bohai Bay Project as Only Unanimous Selection

IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) announced today that the Bohai Phase II Development Project was named by Platts as its Engineering Project of the Year in the Premier Projects category at the recent 2010 Global Energy Awards gala in New York, N.Y. The Bohai Phase II Development Project is located off China’s coast. The Fluor offshore engineering project was the sole unanimous selection of the 17 winners and more than 150 finalists.

“This project wowed the judging panel and resulted in its only unanimous decision in 2010,” said Kim Khalife, Platts global head of strategic accounts. “The judges were most impressed by the sheer scope of the project, its unique challenges, but more importantly, the innovative solutions Fluor provided.”

“Designed specifically to reward engineering excellence, the Engineering Project of the Year recognizes achievements in surmounting specific engineering challenges, whether in complex and difficult environments, in executing a precision task, or in solving specific engineering problems in new ways,” said John Kingston, Platts global director of news. “The innovative aspects of the engineering project involved and the difficulties overcome in implementation were also considered.”

“We are honored to be chosen by a world-class energy information organization like Platts as the Engineering Project of the Year for this unique offshore project off the coast of China,” said Peter Oosterveer, president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals Group. “The other project finalists were truly ground-breaking and magnificent engineering marvels, which makes the Bohai selection truly noteworthy for our Fluor team.”

Jointly owned by ConocoPhillips and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the project is located 140 miles offshore in Bohai Bay, China, and included the development of an oil field with a capacity of 190,000 barrels-per-day of oil production. The floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), one of the largest in the world, measures more than 320 meters long and can store two million barrels.

Fluor was also a Platts finalist in the Construction category for its Luminant Oak Grove Units 1 & 2 clean coal project in Texas, which has also been recognized in 2010 for its engineering, procurement and construction excellence by both POWER Magazine and Power Engineering.
