Green Ethernet Switch Solutions Deliver Industry-Best Power Savings for High-Density Ethernet Switching Applications

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Pink Sheets: VTSS), a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, today announced that it is the only vendor providing pre-production silicon devices that fully support the newly ratified IEEE 802.3az-2010 Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) Standard for high density 8G-26G Ethernet switching solutions. Delivering power-saving features that exceed the IEEE's 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standards, Vitesse's Layer 2 switch and transceiver portfolio facilitates faster design of second-generation "green-enabled" Ethernet Small/Medium Business (SMB) and Enterprise switching equipment. These switch engines minimize power consumption by 75% in the network by optimizing performance for all link speeds, setting the lowest benchmark threshold for power.

With the introduction of 802.3az 2010 EEE and Energy StarTM's upcoming Small and Large Networking Equipment Standards, Enterprise and Carrier equipment vendors recognize the need to introduce green electronics with improved energy efficient features sets that tackle the current and anticipated green networking requirements. According to the IEEE, when 802.3az-compliant products have been fully deployed in new and existing Ethernet networks, U.S. power saving estimates can reach five terawatt-hours per year, which translates into a reduction of the ICT carbon footprint by roughly five million tons per year.

Vitesse's complete line of power-saving Gigabit Ethernet copper physical layer (PHY) transceivers and Gigabit Ethernet switching solutions range from 8- to 26-unmanaged and managed ports and incorporate Vitesse's award-winning EcoEthernetTM v.2.0 technology. This technology delivers unprecedented energy efficiency with green features such as PerfectReachTM intelligent cable length algorithm and ActiPHYTM automatic link-power down, as well as the idle power savings in compliance with newly ratified IEEE802.3az standard. These devices also feature integrated temperature monitoring and fan control, both of which eliminate the need for a cooling fan, reducing noise BOM and cost while increasing system reliability.
