Liv Ullmann presents the International Ibsen Award to Jon Fosse

The International Ibsen Award for 2010 has been given to the Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse. The award will be presented on 10 September during the Ibsen Festival at the National Theatre in Oslo

OSLO -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --

This award was established by the Norwegian government in 2007, and previous prize winners were Peter Brook in 2008 and Ariane Mnouchkine in 2009. The statement from the jury says that the International Ibsen Award for 2010 has been presented to Jon Fosse for his unique dramatic authorship, which opens the stage curtains onto the wordless mysteries that follow mankind from the cradle to the grave. Jon Fosse

The Norwegian writer Jon Fosse is one of the most prominent names in contemporary drama. He was born in 1959 and lives in Bergen, Norway. He is an author, poet and playwright, with more than 30 plays to his credit. Since his debut in 1994, his plays have been staged more than nine hundred times across the world. Fosse has been translated into Albanian, Hebrew, Catalan, Farsi, Sami, Slovenian, Tibetan and more than 40 other languages. He has previously received a number of prizes and awards, including the Scandinavian National Theatre Award (2002), the Arts Council Norway Honorary Prize (2003) and the Swedish Academy's Nordic Prize (2007).

The International Ibsen Award

The International Ibsen Award honours an individual, organisation or institution in the fields of culture and art that has made a significant contribution in the spirit of Henrik Ibsen. The prize is intended to stimulate critical debate about significant social and existential subjects. The prize amount is set at 2.5 million Norwegian Kroner (approx. 300,000 Euro or 400,000 US dollars).

The International Ibsen Stage Festival

The International Ibsen Stage Festival The International Ibsen Stage Festival takes place from 26 August to 11 September in Oslo. An international press conference will be held prior to the award ceremony. If you cover the presentation, you will also be able to participate in the Skien International Ibsen Conference on 10 and 11 September, and see several performances during the Ibsen Festival.
