Enabling Seamless Merger of DOCSIS Over EPON for Cable Operators

PETALUMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Teknovus, the leading provider of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) chips for the deployment of triple-play services in FTTx broadband access networks, announced initial availability of its DOCSIS Mediation Layer (DMLTM) middleware for cable operator equipment vendors. Teknovus’ DML enables MSOs to leverage their DOCSIS infrastructure as they deploy EPON-based fiber networks, taking advantage of this proven FTTx architecture for advanced broadband services supporting residential, business and backhaul subscribers.

Teknovus designed its DML middleware in cooperation with leading US and Japanese MSOs and multinational cable equipment vendors. Teknovus’ DML is just one product in the Teknovus MSO Middleware product suite. The DML middleware enables preservation of the MSO’s system integration model and all back-office systems. New FTTx-based services can be provisioned and managed using the DOCSIS and PacketCable architecture, eliminating the rewriting of subscriber provisioning and management systems and costly retraining. With more than 64 million cable subscribers in the US alone, the preservation of existing investment is crucial to cable operators as they begin FTTx deployments.

American and Asian cable operators are in the early stages of FTTx network deployments. Brighthouse Networks began to offer business services on its EPON-based FTTx network in 2007. Teknovus EPON chips enabled Brighthouse, through equipment vendors, to offer triple-play services with guaranteed QoS and SLAs, meeting the strict upstream and downstream requirements of business subscribers.

Teknovus’ DML software is designed for use in multiple configurations, such as: (1) an independent server managing multiple OLTs and ONUs; (2) direct integration with an OLT; and (3) integration with Next Generation Modular CMTS equipment.

The DML development kit is available immediately for testing and integration by cable operator equipment vendors.

Teknovus will be demonstrating DOCSIS over EPON Middleware during The Cable Show from April 1st to April 3rd at the Washington, DC Convention Center, suite ES-47.
