CAMPBELL, Calif.--()--AOptix (www.aoptix.com), a pioneer in ultra-high capacity wireless communications, and Top Express, a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure and civil engineering in the Asia Pacific region, today announced their partnership to deploy the AOptix Intellimax wireless transport device as part of a trial to expand high-speed broadband connectivity to Hong Kong and its surrounding islands.

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated regions in the world, and across both mainland Hong Kong and its outlying islands, the needs for greater connectivity and bandwidth availability in the region have been fueled by growing LTE and Internet traffic.

“Hong Kong has more than 700 villages scattered throughout the New Territories and outlying islands, making comprehensive deployment of fiber-based networks extremely difficult, if not altogether impossible,” said Allen Law, CTO of Top Express. “The area’s shipping lanes would require that we bury the fiber cabling more than six feet beneath the sea floor to ensure that they aren’t severed by maritime traffic, a process that is both risky and expensive. As a wireless technology however, AOptix Intellimax is an ideal solution to deliver high-speed, multi-gigabit connectivity without the need for trenching undersea cables.”

The six kilometer link scheduled for construction in mid-December will act as a proof-of-concept for the Top Express “Village Project” to increase speed and availability of broadband connections in Hong Kong. The new link relies on AOptix’ advanced Laser-Radio technology, a hybrid solution that combines advanced wireless optics with millimeter wave radio to deliver multi-gigabit performance and carrier-grade availability, even in severe weather conditions.

“The microwave transmission system currently being used in the territory is limited to 100 megabits-per-second of service, and can no longer meet Hong Kong’s growing capacity and availability needs,” said Christina Richards, VP of Marketing at AOptix. “Using Laser-Radio technology however, the new link will increase the level of available bandwidth to these islands by a factor of 20, and dramatically boost the speed of the islands’ network connectivity.”

AOptix’ Laser-Radio has been deployed in seven countries across four continents with top-tier service provider networks, and applications ranging from dense urban mobile backhaul to bolstering telecommunications in remote parts of the world.
