Teknovus Turbo-EPONTM Extends to China

OFC/NFOEC 2009

PETALUMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Teknovus, the leading provider of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) chips for the deployment of triple-play services in FTTx broadband access networks, announced that commercial deployments of 2.5G EPON are extending to China following deployments in Japan and Korea. Recently, the CCSA (China Communications Standards Association) added 2.5G EPON as a qualified standard (www.ccsa.org.cn).

Teknovus EPON chips were first deployed in China in 2006 and today can be found throughout the country ranging from the major cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen to the smaller cities of Wuhan and Harbin, as well as rural areas. Teknovus’ customers include all of China Telecom’s qualified equipment vendors for fiber access networking and customer premises equipment.

Teknovus’ 2.5G EPON chips, known as Turbo-EPONTM, are now widely deployed throughout Asia. KDDI, a leading Japanese service provider offering both mobile and fixed communication services, was the first carrier to deploy Turbo-EPON. In Korea, Teknovus’ Turbo-EPON chips are in deployment with LG Powercom. LG Powercom is one of the largest and most advanced communications service providers in Korea, with an extensive, modern optical network throughout the country.

Fiberhome is now beginning shipments of Teknovus’ Turbo-EPON systems for deployments in China. “Teknovus 2.5G EPON chips enable service providers to economically roll out triple-play fiber networks to the masses,” stated Dr. Jianli Wang, VP of Fiberhome. “Fiberhome’s equipment, based on Teknovus chips, ensures carrier-class QoS (Quality of Service) in a shared network, along with advanced network management and monitoring for ease of operation. Teknovus’ chips are highly-integrated, supporting low-power usage and flexibility at the customer premises side, enabling service providers to ‘go green’ while supporting a wide range of subscriber requirements.”

Teknovus’ Turbo-EPON customers are deploying solutions in their respective home countries and for the export market. In addition to China, Fiberhome is focusing on Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, and Eastern Europe.

“We saw China’s EPON FTTx subscriber base grow from 2 million in 2007 to more than 8 million in 2008, and we are seeing similar growth this year,” stated Mark Jiang, Teknovus General Manager – China. “We have proven in Japan, Korea, and now China, that our Turbo-EPON – with seamless backwards compatibility to our 1G EPON – enables service providers to upgrade to higher speeds cost effectively.”

The TK3723 is the Turbo-EPON OLTTM (dual-speed, dual-port, Optical Line Terminal chip for the central office). For the customer premises side, referred to as the ONU (Optical Network Unit), Teknovus offers two Turbo-EPON chips, the TK3714 and the TK3715 (specifically for China).

Teknovus Turbo-EPON supports twice the conventional speed of EPON at similar price points. With backwards compatibility to 1G EPON using WDM, Turbo-EPON supports both speeds simultaneously, enabling service providers to preserve existing investments in customer premises equipment. Turbo-EPON provides service providers with the flexibility to differentiate on speed or on higher split ratios, leading to increased revenue opportunities or very low costs per subscriber, or both.

Come see Teknovus’ 2.5G and 10G EPON solutions at OFC – Booth 3149 – this week in San Diego.
