BEIJING, & CALABASAS, Calif.--()--DTS, Inc. (NASDAQ: DTSI), a leader in high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies, today announced a collaboration with premium Chinese smartphone brand, vivo, to bring to market the first smartphones featuring DTS Headphone:X™. This relationship will enable vivo’s new XPlay3S, the company’s flagship 2K Hi-Fi smartphone, to render up to 7.1 channels of surround sound over any pair of headphones, when listening to multi-channel content delivered by their service.

“We have received a tremendous amount of interest from our mobile partners since first announcing Headphone:X, and today are delighted to announce, in conjunction with vivo, the first smartphone to feature this groundbreaking new technology,” said Jon Kirchner, chairman and CEO, DTS. “We are excited to be working with vivo, as this relationship has presented DTS the opportunity to deliver the first Headphone:X ecosystem to the world’s largest smartphone market.”

“At vivo, we believe in the importance of audio quality and how it can enhance the entertainment experience offered by our products,” said Mr. Feng Lei, CMO of vivo. “Headphone:X is a particularly exciting new technology because it enables our new products, starting with the XPlay3S smartphone, to produce an accurate acoustic representation of how content was recorded in studio.

DTS Headphone:X technology expands and focuses sound far beyond the boundaries of a pair of headphones, allowing listeners to hear their favorite content as if it was coming from multiple speakers located around and above them, with a higher degree of accuracy than was ever before possible.

The vivo XPlay3S will allow consumers to experience:

  • Immersive surround sound over headphones from multi-channel content
  • An improved listening experience for stereo content

“As consumers increasingly demand that their mobile devices provide an entertainment experience comparable to that of the big screen, the industry has mainly focused on improving the visual capabilities of these devices, leaving sound largely untouched,” said Brian Towne, chief operating officer and executive vice president, DTS. “DTS recognizes the important role sound plays in consumer enjoyment of entertainment content, and designed Headphone:X to harness the incredible power of today’s smartphones, tablets and other consumer electronics, greatly advancing their audio capabilities, and providing consumers with a fully immersive mobile entertainment experience unlike anything ever offered before.”
