PISCATAWAY, N.J. & SHANGHAI--()--The MIPI® Alliance, an international organization that develops interface specifications for mobile and mobile-influenced industries, is pleased to announce the mutual collaboration between the Alliance and PCI-SIG® has resulted in the release of the Mobile PCI Express® (M-PCIe™) specification.

The new technology specification enables PCIe® architecture to operate over the MIPI M-PHY® (physical layer technology), extending the benefits of the PCIe I/O standard to mobile devices including thin laptops, tablets and smartphones.

“The M-PCIe specification incorporates class-leading I/O architecture into a proven mobile technology, giving implementers of this specification a major design advantage for mobile platforms,” said Al Yanes, president and chairman, PCI-SIG. “PCI-SIG is taking significant steps to provide its members with new mobile-focused technology to meet the demand for flexible I/O in the rapidly evolving mobile device market. We’re pleased to enable the delivery of PCIe specifications to many market segments.”

The M-PCIe specification extends the reach of the current PCIe architecture into the mobile space. The MIPI M-PHY provides the high-performance, low-power physical layer technology necessary to implement designs that meet the needs of today’s mobile devices. The adoption of PCIe protocols to operate over the M-PHY physical layer provides the mobile industry with a scalable solution that enables interoperability and consistent user experience across multiple devices. In addition to PCIe, MIPI’s M-PHY specification has been implemented within JEDEC JC-64.1 Universal Flash Storage (UFS) and the USB 3.0 Promoter Group’s Superspeed Inter-Chip (SSIC) specification.

“The MIPI Alliance M-PHY® has proven to be the physical layer specification of choice to implement the high performance and low power requirements for tablets and smart phones,” said Joel Huloux, Chairman, MIPI Alliance. “Collaboration with the PCI-SIG on the new M-PCIe specification provides users drastically reduced product development and validation cycles, as well as access to a truly mobile focused physical layer interface technology.”

Implementers of this technology must be members of the MIPI® Alliance. The M-PCIe specification is available through the PCI-SIG website.
