DUBAI, United Arab Emirates--()--With events and activities to keep visitors to Dubai enthralled with fun, amusement and edutainment, Dubai’s annual summer extravaganza has got off to a rousing start with hundreds of thousands of visitors arriving in the emirate in the first two weeks of the Dubai Summer Surprises, which also flagged off the wider “Summer is Dubai” campaign on 7th June.

This year, Dubai Summer Surprises is a part of the unique “Summer is Dubai” campaign organised by the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). “Summer is Dubai” also comprises Modhesh World, Ramadan in Dubai and Eid in Dubai – making for a continuous celebration from June 7 to September 7 which presents Dubai as the summer destination of choice for families from the region and around the world.

Setting the tone for the “Summer is Dubai” campaign, DSS 2013 will run for a month until July 7 and features festivities, special occasions, celebrations and winning opportunities galore. The DSS experience has been further enhanced with the opening of Modhesh World, the region’s largest indoor edutainment destination for families on 20 June.

Figures for DSS 2012 show that the region’s most popular summer event attracted 4.36 million participants, while total spend on retail, travel and hospitality during the 2012 summer extravaganza was AED 12.3 billion ($3.34 billion).

DTCM Director General Hilal Al Marri said: “We are delighted with the overwhelming positive response to Dubai Summer Surprises from local residents, regional and international visitors in the first two weeks of the event. The remarkable results of last year’s edition come in a time where the government of Dubai is providing more support than ever before to the festivals and events industry as a vital tool to support Dubai’s vibrant tourism sector. Looking back at the great history of achievements and successes that DSS has registered as a summer attraction, it is imperative for us to continue developing and elevating the standards of our offerings to maintain our regional leadership as a preferred summer destination”.

Some of the world-class events and concerts that have already taken place during DSS this year include the Dubai Rock Festival, Elvis Forever – a tribute to the king of rock n’ roll, shows by British comedian Michael McIntyre and the Wayans Brothers and a one-of-a-kind Pillow Fight at The Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping mall. Children are still in for a huge treat with internationally renowned cartoon character shows such as The Smurfs, and Strawberry Shortcake due to be held in leading malls in the city, as well as exciting events like the Kids’ Fashion Week, and the Dubai Sports World, a destination for sporting action during the summer.
