Cortina Continues to Deliver on Its Integrated Access Platform with Aggregation Switching Products

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cortina Systems, Inc. (Cortina™), a fast-growing leader of intelligent communication systems, today announced two additional products for its Integrated Access platform, a comprehensive technology development suite for the emerging access network. The CS8222 and CS8224 aggregation devices designed for xDSL and EFM aggregation enable higher port density with significant OEM BOM Savings. The CS8222 and CS8224 are designed to perform all the packet processing, Quality of Service (QoS) Management, subscriber management, and aggregation functions to enable the evolution of next generation optical access networks from the installed, legacy copper local loop infrastructure.

“The gaining popularity of VDSL2 technology for IPTV applications requires much higher performance and density DSL aggregator devices than what is currently available,” said Balakumar Velmurugan, director, Access Business Unit at Cortina Systems, Inc. “The CS8222 and CS8224 enable carriers to offer higher bandwidth services over their existing copper access network without having to go through Capex intensive fiber upgrades.”

Cortina aggregation chips not only provide valuable cost savings and reduce the R&D cycle for OEM customers, they also offer more functionality compliant with the broadband forum TR-101, IEEE 802.1ad standards and various carrier specific deployment specifications.

“The CS8222 and CS8224 are the industry’s first DSL aggregation switching and Ethernet aggregation switching silicon respectively, with integrated control processor supporting up to 128 subscribers in a single chip,” commented Velmurugan. “They are designed to provide a low power, cost optimized, standards compliant aggregation switching solution that otherwise would take a lengthy and cumbersome integration effort to build for the same number of subscriber density.”

Cortina Integrated Access Platform

Developed through close collaboration with strategic carrier partners, Cortina’s new Integrated Access platform covers the complete network – from customer-premises equipment (CPE) to aggregation access nodes, multi-dwelling unit systems, and both fiber and copper-based central office platforms. The Integrated Access technology seamlessly addresses PON technologies, Cable, Active Ethernet, and xDSL aggregation technologies under one system development platform to enable customers to reduce R&D cost and accelerate time to market. The previously announced CS8x12 product family, the industry’s first Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU), addresses EPON, GPON, and Active Ethernet deployments.

CS8222 and CS8224: xDSL and EFM Aggregation Switch

The CS8222 and CS8224 are architected as carrier class devices, with the ability to manage per subscriber and per service QoS allowing vendors to individually manage per subscriber voice, data, and video services to realize higher revenue for the carriers. They come in RoHS-5 and RoHS-6 packages meeting the outdoor plant deployment requirements.

The CS8222 and CS8224 have a flow based traffic manager, integrated with a carrier class packet classifier and control/management plane processor. Both provide dual active Ethernet uplink ports and support a large number of subscribers through aggregation and management. The CS8222, a xDSL aggregation device, offers higher subscriber density with a integrated TR-101 compliant aggregation switch. The CS8224 is a similar aggregation device designed for Ethernet aggregation applications and is compliant with 802.1ad, 802.1d, and 802.1q standards.

The CS8222 and CS8224 are sampling with major customers.
