STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The College Board and the National Society for the Gifted and Talented (NSGT) today announced that the SAT will be administered to all NSGT University Prep participants, including Chinese and international students, on August 3, 2012.

As the number of international students, including Chinese nationals, enrolling at U.S. colleges and universities continues to grow, there is interest in providing these students with increased access to the SAT. While the SAT is currently administered in Mainland China, testing is limited to non-Chinese nationals to comply with guidelines set forth by China’s Ministry of Education. However, international students attending NSGT University Prep this summer will have the unique opportunity to take the SAT during the summer months and report the scores to colleges and universities as part of the admission process.

NSGT, a not-for-profit organization, will administer the SAT at no additional cost to the participants of NSGT University Prep, a 3-week intensive college preparatory program at Amherst College held each summer. The program costs $4,495 and runs from July 15 through August 4, 2012 with the SAT being administered to program participants only on August 3. Official SAT score reports from the August 3 NSGT administration will be sent to the colleges and universities designated by the student test-takers.

The deadline to apply for University Prep, open to U.S. and international students between the ages of 15 and 18, is May 15.

“We understand that Chinese students have extremely limited opportunities to take the SAT," states Barbara Swicord, Ed.D., President of NSGT. “We are delighted that these students can now take the test during the summer while also experiencing an enriching program that will prepare them intensively for the college admissions process.”

The August test date marks the first time that the United States’ oldest and most widely-used college entrance exam will be administered to students outside the standard academic year.

Created by educators to democratize access to higher education, the SAT is a highly reliable standardized measure of college readiness used in the admission process at more than 95 percent of four-year, not-for-profit undergraduate colleges and universities in the United States. Aligned to high school curriculum, the SAT assesses reading, mathematics and writing skills and knowledge that students acquire during high school. The SAT also measures how well students can apply their knowledge, a factor that educators and researchers agree is critical to success in college.

“We are very pleased to collaborate with NSGT University Prep on this initiative,” states Matt Lisk, Executive Director of the SAT Program. “The College Board and NSGT share a common goal of preparing students to succeed in college, and this unique summer SAT administration will help further our mission of connecting students to college success and opportunity.”

Founded in 1900, the College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization created to expand access to higher education.
