This magnificent imperial white jade ceremonial vessel is considered very rare. The vessel is carved from a single piece of Burmese jadeite. The exterior is flanked by a pair of mythical lion-heads, issuing handles suspending loose rings. The well-fitted angular cover is surmounted with a rounded knob. The surface of the vessel is polished to create a waxy sheen and the main body is graced relief designs of the five classics, wujing, by Confucius. These five classics were the principal texts for teaching noblemen in China since the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.). The symbols represented by five young scholars performing the five different virtues: charity of heart, duty towards one’s neighbor, propriety, wisdom, and truth. The vase measures 10 inches tall x 6 inches wide (25.4cm x 15.2cm).
