WiMAX Forum Congress Asia 09

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On April 28-29, 2009, more than 1600 WiMAX professionals from 66 countries converged on the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre for the 2nd Annual WiMAX Forum Congress Asia, the operator-driven event for the Asia Pacific continent.

Out of the 108 speakers present at the show, 29 represented operators. The growing momentum of Congress Asia is a reflection of the region's increased WiMAX activity, both in developed and developing markets. From India through to Pakistan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Australia, extensive WiMAX deployments are already underway.

“WiMAX is not just a 4G technology, it’s the first generation of mobile Internet technologies and now is the time to get involved and maximize the time to market advantage we have,” said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum. “Operators are deploying now, regulators are making more spectrum available around the world and investors should bet on the Internet. These messages were echoed time and again at our show this week and I am encouraged to see the entire ecosystem acting on them today.”

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”) - Showcases Mobile WiMAX to the World

A fully booked live WiMAX tour took visitors to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the latest unwired city and home to WiMAX wireless broadband.

The live tour provided Congress Asia attendees with the opportunity to enjoy live WiMAX connectivity on the move in a real-life metropolitan environment. Additionally, attendees were able to experience seamless mobility between Wi-Fi and WiMAX, which demonstrated uninterrupted connectivity while on the go.

“The success of today’s showcase to a global audience underlines P1’s leadership position in the world’s WiMAX deployment. The demonstration of mobile WiMAX on a commercial WiMAX network marks the beginning of a shift in the ecosystem of mobile wireless products and services,” said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1. “This is the defining year for WiMAX, we need to keep the momentum and continue to make sure we do it. As I mentioned before, ‘If we do it, they will come.’ Furthermore, the population in South Asia is two billion people and 1 out of every 3 people in the region have no access to broadband. That is the opportunity there and we just have to make sure we are making it happen.”

Exhibitors showcased and demonstrated the latest in WiMAX solutions to the many attendees on the show floor over the two day event. The success of the event was evidenced by ecosystem players signing up for the 2010 Asia show scheduled to be held again in late April. At the close of the exhibition 47% of the 2009 floor space had already been reserved for 2010.

The WiMAX Forum® and its event partner, Informa Telecoms & Media, will now turn their attention to the next show in the series, the 2nd Annual WiMAX Forum Global Congress, the flagship event in the series. The Global Congress will take place in Amsterdam on June 2-3, 2009 and is expecting to attract more than 80 exhibitors and 3000 attendees.
