MINNEAPOLIS -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Digital River, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRIV), a leading global provider of Commerce-as-a-Service solutions, announced that it is releasing the results of a new research report2014 Eastern Europe Digital Games Market – at Gamescom, one of the largest trade fairs and events for interactive games in Europe. The report, which was commissioned by Digital River and conducted by SuperData Research, provides valuable insights into digital gaming revenue opportunities as well as player purchase preferences and buying trends in Eastern Europe. Digital River will be exhibiting at the conference, which is being held August 13-15, 2014, at the Cologne International Expocentre. Digital River’s booth space is located in Hall 4.2, Aisle A, No 020.

The research findings are based on SuperData’s syndicated data from a user base of 3.3 million Eastern European online gamers as well as a customized survey of approximately 1,100 respondents conducted earlier this year. Findings of the study addressed the following countries – Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine – and revealed:

  • Russia, Turkey and Poland dominate 84 percent of the Eastern European digital games market, accounting for $1.9 billion of the estimated $2.2 billion in digital games revenue.
  • Smaller EEU markets are key in strategic rollout for publishers as growth outpaces the larger Russian and Turkish markets.
  • Growth in Eastern Europe is largely driven by social games and free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) games.
  • Developing and localizing for MMO female players is important in Russia, Turkey and Poland, where there is relatively high levels of participation.
  • Payment preferences demand a custom strategy in Eastern European countries.

“The growing digital game market continues to create compelling opportunities for publishers and developers interested in entering the Eastern European countries,” said David Woolenberg, Digital River’s senior vice president, global sales for digital commerce. “The study looked at the MMO, social, mobile, digital PC and digital console games markets. With payment preferences, as well as player demographics and engagement factors varying by country and platform, the results reinforce that ecommerce success in this region will be tied to go-to-market and monetization strategies that are tailored to suit each geography individually.”
